Surrealist designer Elsa Schiaparelli saw beauty in unexpected places and things, such as bugs and beetles. Schiaparelli made women feel beautiful, and daring, with garments featuring clever buttons, cast into the shapes of beetles. Alongside opulent embroidery, she chose realistic beetles and other insects to decorate jewelry, buttons, and suit collars for her fall 1938 nature-based "Pagan" collection.
