Bleeding Heart Pearl Earrings

The bleeding heart is a tribute to the novelty trend made popular in the 1940s, which sees a revival today. This iconic design features ruby red crystals, set in gold bleeding hearts, finished with a classic pearl. As a delicate, deco, design inspired by the runway, these classic, yet bold jewels make just the right statement in rouge.

The iconic "Jezebel" sweater with a patch of a heart, pierced by a jeweled dagger, has recently been revived on the runway today. This was evident in Marco Zanini's F/W 2014 - 2015 Haute Couture collection for the new Schiaparelli, playing up the surrealism seen in old Schiaparelli. However, the original design concept came from American designer Susan Dannenberg from Los Angeles, who created herself sweaters in the early 1940's. To "distract from her portly figure," she added wacky felt novelty appliques, such as poodles, hearts, and pink elephants to sweaters. Seen in LIFE magazine in 1947 on Nina Leen, the "suse" sweaters became a hit. Stars like Barbara Stanwyck & Esther Williams were some of her best customers for handmade pieces. "Jezebel" was the most popular design, in a variety of colors, but always with a red heart.
